University of Ottawa takes a fresh approach to Twitter

by Adrian Ebsary

Twitter’s rapid growth, the majority occurring after 2007, has spurred its evolution from social broadcasting network to legitimate, breaking news medium. “Tweeps” have united at a number of internationally recognized events, including the 2011 Women’s World Cup final between Japan and the United States, where a record 7,196 tweets were posted per second. As the University of Ottawa’s new Online Community Strategist, I believe this instantaneous sharing has the potential to improve the postsecondary educational experience and enhance the interconnectedness of our students and alumni.

This week, we have launched three main accounts on Twitter: @uOttawa, @uOttawaNow and @uOttawaEnDirect. In keeping with our official commitment to bilingualism, the @uOttawa account will disseminate news primarily about the University of Ottawa, in French and English simultaneously. The @uOttawaNow and @uOttawaEnDirect accounts (replacing @uOttawa_News and @uO_Communiques) will tweet in English and French, respectively. These accounts will share and re-share information gathered by our web and media relations teams throughout the day, tweeting with greater frequency than our @uOttawa account.

Soon, we will compile lists of relevant University of Ottawa tweeps and Twitter accounts to help you more easily navigate our extended Twitter community. We also have a number of interesting projects planned for this upcoming year that will cover various social media networks, so be sure to stay tuned to our accounts. If you’ve got some great ideas about how you’d like to see uOttawa start using social media, I encourage you to contact me on Twitter (@AJEbsary) and make sure you begin following our new accounts!
